Archives

Hello SCWS,

It is a joy to have the Archives’ commitment for these last years. Being so close to the people who shaped our Area in the fellowship has been life changing. I love, love reading the early writings of our precious long timers. It has shown me that each one of us is vital to the future of Al-Anon. Meeting so many while being of service is a gift.
You can meet them too.
Join us:

SAVE THE DATE: August 8th- Southern California Celebrates Long timers and Al-Anon’s 75th Anniversary.

What I wrote above is something I wrote over 20 years ago!!
Our fellowship lives on because of these members, and especially because you choose to go to meetings. Picking a home group and taking a seat has kept Al-Anon alive for 75 yrs so far.

.
In 2026 we have now officially gone back to Assemblies in person and on zoom. With this, we get to see each other and share flyers and news throughout the day. In the past we have had our “Traveling Archives” that are shown at the Assemblies and have been borrowed for Conventions and District events. We are now able to bring them out regularly. This year the San Diego Roundup borrowed one.
Also, after 25 years, our boards needed replacing. Replacing and refreshed.

One of my goals is to collect and pass on district items from their long timers to have in their own District files. Area 4 is far too large for one archive coordinator to make even a dent in all she wants to do in her there years. For every District to get info to the area, we need easier ways to get the information on paper.

Heather and Sue are our webmasters. Heather will be adding a tab to the SCWS website for archives.
There will be forms you are able to fill out online.
1. Meeting Histories
2. Member Histories
3. Possibly District Histories

Everything we ask you to do is for fun and for free. Completing these histories will take time, yet they will be additions to Al-Anons history in our area.

Below is something Teresa our delegate, provided that was written by Lois W.
Speaks to what our area is looking to have in our area archives. A tall order, but now is the time to request your participation.

Lois on the importance of an Archives:
We have an archives in part to provide a record of our development for future historians…but also because, as time passes and or Fellowship continues to grow and expand, we find ourselves further and further away from the events of our past…we must be assured that the facts will always be available to guard against a misunderstanding of what has taken place.
Lois

I look forward to reading all the submissions from you on our website. Write any questions to archives@scws-al-anon.org.

See you at the Assembly at the Long Timers Celebration August 8th in Glendale.

Love in service to all of you.

For any DR requiring assistance please reach out to me and I will be happy to provide a group or one-on-one assistance via Zoom. Make sure you can access your district account at ogr.al-anon.org to obtain Alateen meeting and AMIAS information.

Group sponsor/AMIAS recertification period officially started January 11th and ended May 15th. AMIAS can attend the June 14th initial AMIAS training to complete their recertification. All AMIAS/Sponsors who have not recertified will be made inactive after June 15, 2026. Once they are made inactive the AMIAS must go through the initial AMIAS certification process to be reactivated.

Group Records

AWSC, May 2026 Report from the SCWS Group Records Coordinator Data as of May 4, 2026

#1.  Area Meeting Data

#2: Bounced emails (CMA emails no longer working or incorrect) and No Mail (CMAs US mailing addresses getting returned to WSO) are ongoing issues. The number of meetings in these categories has increased. DRs are encouraged to continue reviewing and resolving the status of these meetings.

  • Bounced emails – no way to communicate with the CMA.
  • No Mail – no way to communicate with the group. The group will be inactivated after a period of time, as WSO will assume the group has disbanded.

#3: Electronic Groups/Meetings Update: We currently have (as of 5/4/2026) 243 Electronic Meetings included in the Active meetings # above.

#4: Registered Group Representatives (GRs). 60.0% (605) of our groups have registered GRs. We have 1,008 groups/1,207 meetings (98 groups meet multiple times per week).

Please continue to check and see if your meeting information is listed correctly. Email grouprecords@scws-al-anon.org for corrections or submit changes via www.scws-al-anon.org/grouprecords/al-anon-group-change-form/

All registered Al-Anon Family Groups (AFG) in active published status are listed on the World Service Office (WSO) “find an Al-Anon Meeting” online directory at https://al-anon.org/al-anon-meetings/find-an-al-anon-meeting/. The WSO maintains other information on registered groups, but the meeting directory listing is very important, as the WSO website is typically the first place a newcomer finds a meeting. In addition, your group is listed on your local Al-Anon Information Service (AIS), Literature Distribution, or District Website. We want the information to be consistent and accurate.

Every Group needs to have a Current Mailing Address (CMA) who attends the group to be connected to our WSO and SCWS. Additionally, both the CMA and the GR must have their primary residence in our Area (Southern California). Don’t let your group be disconnected.

Hospitality

We are all set for our May Assembly and I want to thank the following Districts for their help in making this event a success. Thank you to Districts 17, 40, 45, 60, 75 and 63. A special thank you to District 17 for providing the “women power” at the welcome/check in table to assist Cathy W. District 42 supplied the volunteers to help set up and stock the coffee, tea, and snack tables. It’s a full-time job! Members will be treated to healthy snacks as well as any chocolate craving they might have! This event has been the smoothest one yet for me and I can’t thank these DR’s/ADR’s enough for making this so easy. Their support is much appreciated.

Institutions

Instititions is very busy moving forward with the OC Jail Project. The Al Anon meeting proposal was submitted again to the Volunteer Coordinator in the jail. There was a meeting with the Volunteer Coordinator and the OC Jail Volunteer Coordinator on April 27th. The potential Al Anon volunteers are submitting background checks which can take 4-6 weeks. Then they will attend a mandatory security clearance. The literature will be submitted to the jail for approval a week prior to the start date. I will be working with Heather our Website Coordinator to create a flyer to be distributed internally in the jails to announce the start of Al Anon meetings. The Volunteer Coordinator stated that they are excited to have Al Anon. They have many AA meetings and some NA meetings. We are still in need of more volunteers. Please contact Shauna at Institutions@scws-al-anon.org or Dick at H_I@ocais.org. if you are interested in volunteering with this very important outreach project.

Public Information

May is my 1 year Anniversary of being elected to the coordinator position for Public Outreach working with Professionals. I entered on a whirlwind as volunteers for the Long Beach Booth for Counselors needed to be filled. I still hold thanks for the cooperation and work everyone put in that weekend. We our stronger when we work together.
I had the privilege of attending the 75th Anniversary Gala for Al Anon. The Gala was memorable but the treat came in touring the WSO office in Virginia Beach, VA. If you have an opportunity to visit WSO you will be treated to architectural Al Anon symbols, archives, the Public Outreach that is done by WSO and again the Knowledge of how strong we are when we work together.
The Al Anon survey taken in 2024 and published in 2026 showed that there was a 5% increase of members coming to the program from Professional Referrals. With that in mind, I hope everyone will spread the word to attend the Public Outreach Workshop. As I am presently working on the committee that will present the workshop, I have thoughts of that percentage of members that arrive in the rooms of Al Anon from Professional referrals increasing as we work together to reach out to Professionals to share the word.

Website

The SCWS website continues to grow and evolve as a tool for our Area. Please visit often as the home page carousel always contains information about upcoming Area Events, the calendar is up-to-date with Area, AIS, and District events as well as conventions.

I have been working with our Archives coordinator, Kathy G., to create an Archive page and a form that you can use to submit your group history and your personal Al-Anon history that you may want to share.

We have seen an increase in DRs, ADRs, and DALs, using an Area email address for our District information page.

If you find any errors or are looking for information, Contact us! We would love to help.

love in service,
